- Inception of the Diamond Project
To address the global economic crisis, Bill Gate appeals American government to invest in education and advance researches
of top universities. He emphasizes that education is the foundation of economy and that the gloomier the recession is,
the more urgent it is to advance education and prominent research projects. In order to boost the economy, the educational
circles seek breakthroughs in researches and industry-university cooperation. In response to this trend, NCTU launches
the Diamond Project—an innovative project which can establish a long-running system and can greatly transform NCTU.
- Plans of the Diamond Project
Taking NCTU as the center, the Diamond Projects aims to cooperate with the Taiwan technology industry, import the
MIT pattern of talent-training and research & development, attract top universities in China and their postgraduates,
and integrate NCTU’s existing vantage in research with the technology industry. Other universities sharing the same
views are welcomed to join the project. Based on the accomplishments which NCTU has achieved during the past fifty years,
the Diamond Project is an institutional reformation to advance technology and attract talents. This influential project
can motivate lasting interest in learning and increase the energy for research in the multi-dimension, globalized world.
This project is the best platform on which Taiwan can train talents and increase its national competence.
The Diamond Project Needs Your Support to Make NCTU Excellent:
To apply for membership of the Diamond Project: annually donating at least NTD 5,000,000 for three consecutive years.
To support the NCTU Wiki Partnership Fund: NTD 10,000,000 can support five hundred undergraduate students to participate in
research projects for at least one semester before graduation (NTD 20,000 for each student).
To advance the Diamond Project: disbursing relevant expenses of this project.
To build the Research & Development Building (estimated expense: NTD 500,000,000, estimated construction time: five years)
Introduction to the Diamond Project
NCTU as the Center
Following the successful pattern of the MIT research staff, NCTU innovatively establishes a new framework to massively
recruit qualified full-time researchers. NCTU will provide them with the same job stability and respect as the faculty
with an eye to establishing a permanent foundation for talent training.
From our observation, the shared feature of world-class research-oriented universities in terms of attracting outstanding,
innovative students is that they all own renowned, long-running top laboratories. Thus, the Diamond Project aims to found
long-running laboratories with the resources provided by corporations involved. This project views permanent full-time
researchers as the pillar. Led by Principle investigator (member of faculty or research staff), the young postgraduate and
postdoctoral compose of the main force in research projects, pursuing the fruit of long-term researches. Besides, the Diamond
Project also supports undergraduates to participate in research projects through establishing the NCTU Wiki Partnership Fund,
which illuminates the concept of Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at MIT.
Transforming NCTU into the MIT in Asia
To internationally advance the standard of the Diamond Project, NCTU will contract projects with MIT and cooperate with Media Lab,
CSAIL, Sloan School, and other MIT research centers. Students of Taiwan and China who join the Diamond Project can hence communicate and
cooperate with students of MIT.
Cooperation with the Technology Industry
The Diamond Project aims to address problems of the researches in the real world. The young, energetic students who join the project can
promptly apply their innovation to the technology industry. Through forming a framework, the Diamond Project provides students opportunities
to do pioneering work, start new businesses, transform ideas into products, and serve the society.
Taiwan’s renowned technology industry plays an important role in fulfilling the Diamond Project. Corporations joining the Project can direct
researches to pursue their objectives by setting research purposes and cooperating with labs at NCTU. This means that corporations can strategically
direct part of their R&D energy to labs at NCTU. By doing so, corporations can save their research time, and both NCTU and they can benefit from this.
Corporations can share the fruits of researches by applying for membership of the Diamond Project. Since a stable research fund is essential,
corporations joining the Diamond Project are required to donate annually, NTD 5,000,000 as one unit, for at least three consecutive years.
Cooperation with Top Universities in China
By forming partnership and contracting postgraduate exchange programs with Shanghai Jiao Tung University, the Diamond Project can
attract the best postgraduate students in China to take courses in Taiwan and participate in research projects of Taiwan technology industry and MIT.
Pioneering Projects
The Diamond Project also aims to establish pioneering laboratories in fields of biotechnology, system-on-chip, network engineering, photonics,
energy and environment, etc.
